Unmasking the Myths and Truths of Sunglasses

Jun 28, 2024 | Glasses

Summer is just around the corner, which means it’s time to break out the sunglasses! But before you make your choice, there’s more to consider than just style.

With so much to think about and plenty of misconceptions out there, we’re here to help. In this blog post, we’ll debunk common myths and guide you through the process of choosing the perfect pair of shades.

So, let’s get started and make sure your eyes are both stylish and well-protected this summer!

Misconception 1: Darker lenses offer better UV protection

There’s a common belief that the darkness of sunglass lenses corresponds to the level of UV protection they provide, but this isn’t always the case!

Truth: UV protection isn’t dependent on lens darkness

The darkness of sunglass lenses isn’t indicative of their ability to block UV rays. When buying sunglasses, a factor to consider is whether the sunglasses provide 100% UV protection.

Look for labels that clearly mention blocking 100% of UVA and UVB rays, regardless of the lens tint. This ensures that your eyes are adequately shielded from harmful UV radiation.

Misconception 2: Only trendy sunglasses are fashionable

Trends come in and out of fashion, but that doesn’t mean trendy glasses are the only stylish frames on the market!

Truth: Classic styles are timelessly fashionable

While trendy sunglasses certainly have their appeal, classic styles never go out of fashion. Timeless designs like aviators, wayfarers, and cat-eye frames exude sophistication and elegance that transcend fleeting trends.

When you invest in classic sunglasses, you get more out of your investment as your frames will stay in fashion forever and you can wear them with lots of different outfits!

Misconception 3: Polarised lenses mean better UV protection

Many people mistakenly assume that polarisation in sunglasses correlates with superior UV protection, however, polarised lenses are associated with clearer vision and reduced glare, not UV protection.

Truth: Polarisation doesn’t determine UV protection

While polarised lenses do reduce glare and enhance visual clarity, their polarisation doesn’t directly affect UV protection. Whether a lens is polarised or not, its ability to block UV rays depends on its specific UV coating.

Misconception 4: All sunglass lens types are equal

Some may believe that the choice of lens material is merely a matter of personal preference, with little impact on eye health or longevity, but this isn’t the case.

Truth: Different lens materials offer unique benefits

While personal preference plays a role in choosing sunglass lens materials, it’s essential to consider their unique characteristics and benefits. For example, polycarbonate lenses are lightweight, impact-resistant, and ideal for sports or outdoor activities. On the other hand, glass lenses provide exceptional optical clarity but may be heavier and more prone to shattering.

Some lens materials offer specific features such as anti-reflective coatings or scratch resistance. Consider your lifestyle, activities, and preferences when selecting the right lens material for your sunglasses.

Misconception 5: Expensive sunglasses provide better UV protection

Luxury sunglasses might mean they are better quality and made from more desirable materials, but a higher price tag doesn’t mean better UV protection.

Truth: UV protection isn’t necessarily tied to price

While some designer brands may incorporate high-quality UV-blocking technology into their lenses, there are also affordable options that provide equally effective protection for your eyes. Focus on finding sunglasses with UV ratings offering 100% UV protection, regardless of their price tag.
